The “Threads” app has also been available in the EU since December 14, 2023. It can be seen as an extension of Instagram, which apparently wants to use microblogging to compete with X (formerly Twitter). What can the app do?
The app is designed for speed. You can link it directly to your Instagram account. This way, users who already follow you on Instagram will quickly become aware of your new profile in Threads. It is also possible to transfer all profile information from your Instagram account to your Threads profile. As already mentioned, Threads is designed for microblogging, which includes the following special features:
Texts of up to 500 words can be posted. These “threads” may contain up to 10 images, gifs and videos. Voice messages can also be attached.
Other accounts can interact with your posts, in particular other accounts can “repost” your messages, similar to “retweet” on X. However, thread content can also be viewed without an account. However, interactions are not possible.

Differences to X
Threads allows longer texts with more media than X. Meta has also announced that Threads will stay away from promoting news and politics and will be used more as a medium for social communication, which could be a key difference from X.
